"I’ve been collecting black and white postcards of paintings and buildings for years, mostly from street vendors in Florence, Lucca and Rome. Postcards are keepsakes - reminders of a place and time. Using ink, paint and gold leaf, I have transformed these postcards into personalized souvenirs.

I started making paper mosaics after I watched the restoration of a large mosaic while visiting San Marco in Venice. The restorers had created a “map” of the mosaic pieces by pressing wet paper onto the surface of the stones and glass before restoration began. Someone then painted a representation of each minute detail of the mosaic onto the paper. This would become a guide to where each fragment would be returned to complete the restoration process. My mosaics are created not by cutting up colored bits of paper, but by creating a surface of white bits of paper, then painting the colors." - Laura Davidson (www.lauradavidson.com)
